- W1033001819 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the thermoanalytical methods used in clay studies. It is convenient to make two or more measurements on one sample at the same time, leading to “simultaneous determinations.” This has advantages and disadvantages, and one has to study not only the bases of the techniques themselves but also the nature of the samples involved before deciding on their use. The chapter illustrates the applications or potential applications of the various techniques now available to clays. In isobaric mass-change determination, the sample is heated at each selected temperature until there is no further mass change and the equilibrium mass is plotted against the temperature: the partial pressure of the evolved volatile is maintained constant throughout the determination. Although differential thermal analysis (DTA) has been the most widely used technique in clay mineralogy, the use of thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) has grown markedly, particularly with the introduction of the derivatograph, which provides simultaneous DTA–TG–DTG curves." @default.
