The functions of the nucleus and chromosomes are defined through the identification and characterization of their component proteins. Circulating serum antibodies to nuclear antigens is indeed a hallmark of systemic rheumatic disease. The antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) are found in a series of related diseases that include systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Sjogren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis (SS), polymyositis and dermatomyositis (PM/DM), mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), connective tissue syndromes, undifferentiated systemic rheumatic diseases, as well as diseases of inflammatory, neoplastic, or drug origin. The chapter describes the types of antibodies commonly detected, the disease with which they are associated, and the corresponding indirect immunofluorescent (IIF) pattern. Autoantibody probes allow the identification of a family of centromere-specific proteins, many of which are now localized to specific domains within the centromere by light and electron microscopy." @default.
