- W10342208 abstract "The discovery that reproductive abnormalities are present in animals born in ecosystems polluted with chemicals known or suspected to have endocrine-disrupting effects may be considered a warning message from wildlife (1,2). Embryonic death, deformities, and abnormal nesting behavior have been observed in fish-eating birds residing in portions of the Great Lakes area where contamination with persistent chlorinated hydrocarbons was known to have occurred (3,4). These hydrocarbons included insecticides, such as 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) and methoxychlor, as well as the polychlorinated and polybrominated biphenyls (PCBs and PBBs). Researchers have observed bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) with crossed beaks, other cranio-facial abnormalities, and brain asymmetry (3–5). Fish in the Great Lakes have reproductive and thyroid abnormalities, whereas male trout (Oncorhyncus mykiss) in some rivers in the UK have elevated plasma vitellogenin levels (6–9). In the Everglades region of Florida, panthers (Felis concolor coryi) have cryptorchidism and other reproductive abnormalities (10). Also in Florida, American alligators (Alligator mississippiens) in Lake Apopka exhibited decreased numbers of juveniles, decreased clutch viability, and abnormalities in reproductive organs following a Dicofol (methoxychlor) spill (11–13). Effects were observed in mink (Mustela vison) fed fish from the Great Lakes and in Beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) of the St. Lawrence River (14–17)." @default.
