- W103433032 abstract "means for whole world, although it has been hijacked to mean just Christian world. The Journal of Ecumenical Studies has in its fifty years done much to rescue word and to show that people of faith and spiritual vision need to come together to offer hope for all humankind and, indeed, for all life. That was vision of a few participants in 1893 World's Parliament of Religions held in Chicago--often seen as beginning of modern interfaith movement. This essay, however, reflects on fifty Congresses, (1) which have received little attention. (2) The denominational congresses were but one of twenty departments of World's Congress Auxiliary, (3) which included a learned Scientific Section (4) and a Congress of Women. (5) Reports of denominational congresses are included both in World's Parliament of Religions, edited by Henry Barrows, who was secretary of World's Parliament of Religions, (6) and in Neely's History of Parliament of Religions and Religious Congresses at World's Columbian Exposition, (7) Both books give quite brief summaries of congresses and reproduce extracts from some of papers. The proceedings of some of congresses are available in print or online. It is surprising in context of Parliament that so few of Christian denominational congresses gave much attention to relationship of religions to each other. They used them as an opportunity to explain history and beliefs of their own denomination and to highlight their missionary work in hospitals and schools, as well as evangelism. I will look at discussion in congresses of relationship of Christianity to other religions, then at Jewish and Buddhist congresses, and finally at universalist congresses. Christian Denominational Congresses The Anglican Church It seems there was no Anglican (Episcopalian) congress, probably because Archbishop of Canterbury disapproved of Parliament. Barrows included a presentation by Rev. Thomas Richey, (8) who said of Parliament, is one great principle which Parliament of Religions represents,--Religion is natural to man as man, and makes human race one. (9) Christians, he said, should have no hesitation in welcoming anyone who is made in image of God and has thirst that religion gives burning in one's heart. It is not for Christianity to lay again foundation that God has laid in hearts of human beings. African Methodist Episcopal Church The congress of African Methodist Episcopal Church was one of few platforms for black Americans. (10) Many of papers focused on social issues, especially as they affected African-Americans. Bishop Henry McNeal Turner, at another meeting in Chicago, expounded his belief that all humanity started black. The Catholic Congress The Roman Catholic Church arranged several well-attended events. (11) Of particular interest is warm support given by Pope Leo XIII and Archbishop of Westminster. The pope sent a personal message to Cardinal James Gibbons. Moreover, Apostolic Nuncio to United States, Archbishop Francis Satolli, attended and in the full robes of his office made a thrilling speech. (12) He made no specific mention of other world religions, although mention was made of nations who have gone out from church, bringing with them many of her treasures, but that face many dangers if cut off from source of those truths. (13) At congress, loyalty to American constitution was emphasized and attempts were made, with some success, to dispel popular prejudice against Catholics. The prominence of Catholic leaders and of rabbis at Parliament helped to create American ecumenical (at one time called interfaith) alliance of Protestants, Catholics, and Jews. There was little reference to other faiths at Catholic events, but, as Seager wrote, liberal Catholic response at Parliament was enthusiastic but cautious. …" @default.
