- W103442931 abstract "Following a previous paper by the same author the fracture process of the Tangshan earthquake of July 28, 1976 is herein further studied. A three-dimensional mechanical model is now presented and more complete results in comparison with those from a two-dimensional model are obtained. It is found that there exists an angular range of about 10° at each end of the major axis of the main fault. Within the angular range, the initial propagation directions of points on the fault plane front are no longer coplanar with its own plane but in a plane making an angle (∞0, θ0) with it. However, for other parts of the fault plane, the front propagates in its own plane. Nearby the two ends of the major axis of the fault plane, the propagation angles are about ∞0=0° and θ0 = 80.5°. They agree with the direction obtained from the two-dimensional mechanical model. Therefore, a large number of aftershocks occur along the fracture branches, making an angle of 80.5° with the major axis of the fault plane, within the angular range of 10° at each end of the major axis of the fault plane. Hence, the fault plane becomes contorted in shape. In a paper given by the author[1] the fracture process in the Tangshan earthquake occurred in 1976 had been analysed using a two-dimensional mechanical model based on the focal mechanism solutions and the concepts of main fracture and fracture branches were presented and used to explain the observed fact that many greater aftershocks occurred along the fracture branches made an angle of 70°-80° with the axis of the fault plane at the major axis ends of the fault plane. However, the actual problem is three-dimensional. Hence, it is necessary to present a three-dimensional mechanical model to obtain more complete results than those from a two-dimensional model." @default.
