- W1034590232 abstract "Gram-negative rod bacteremias are a major component of nosocomial infections. Studies in humans and experimental animals support a protective role for opsonic antibodies directed against bacillary surface antigens. These include somatic (O, lipopolysaccharide) capsular (K), and protein antigens. A role for antitoxic immunity cannot be excluded as well, and antibodies to substances such as Pseudomonas exotoxin A may give additive protection. Augmented levels of opsonic antibodies in humans at onset of sepsis correlate with protection and conversely, antibody deficiency with poor prognosis. Such results must be cautiously interpreted because these antibodies are often a reflection of underlying disease and/or presence of chronic infection. Definitive evidence for protection must come from antibody supplementation or augmentation and there have been few well-designed human studies of immunoprophylaxix/or therapy. Animal studies indicate that monoclonal antibodies against type-specific lipopolysaccharides of P. aeruginosa are both opsonic and protective. The functional capacity of antibodies directed against common core regions of lipopolysaccharide deserve further evaluation." @default.
