- W1035751186 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses chemiluminescence from electron-transfer processes. Two critical elements seem to be a high-reaction energy and a very short duration for the actual reaction event. The exothermicity in forming ground-state products must be at least the energy required for electronic excitation. The small peroxides and their capacity for chemiluminescence have been interesting to workers in bioluminescence because they appear to be useful models for natural luciferins. Redox chemiluminescence is the system in which the anion and cation radicals of rubrene annihilate to yield a rubrene molecule in its first excited singlet state. Radical-ion reactions cannot be carried out in the presence of significant amounts of protic impurities, such as water or alcohols, because anion radicals are fairly strong bases and they decay in the presence of proton donors. Cation radicals are similarly sensitive to nucleophiles. Oxygen is also detrimental, because it reacts with most anion radicals." @default.
