- W1035797890 abstract "Background: Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection is commonamong hemodialysis patients with End stage renaldisease (ESRD) and probably occurs through nosocomialinfection. Strict infection control measures should betaken and implemented to prevent nosocomial infection. Objective: To determine the seroprevalence and riskfactors for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection amongpatients at Dialysis Unit Dr. Sardjito GeneralHospital, Yogyakarta.Method: Total 137 patients who come to the hemodialysisunit of Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta has beenrecruited using consecutive sampling method. Serumsamples were obtained, centrifuged and tested atPathology Anatomy Lab of Universitas Gadjah Mada,Yogyakarta. Testing for anti-HCV antibodies wasperformed at initiation of hemodialysis and every 36months thereafter. Results: Out of 137 patients, 112 were males and 25were females. The age group varied from 19 to 76 years. The overall anti-HCV antibody prevalence rate amonghemodialysis patient was 81,8%. In men the prevalencerate of anti HCV antibody positive (77,8%) was highercompared to negative anti-HCV antibody (22,2%) Theprevalence age among the age group 15-29 of positiveanti-HCV antibody was 80,0% compared to negative anti-HCV antibody (20,0%). The prevalence of positive anti-HCV antibody among the age group 30-44 years was 85,7%compared to negative anti-HCV antibody (14,3%). It isobserved in the age group of 45-59, the prevalence rateof anti-HCV antibody was higher (82,6%) compared toanti-HCV negative (17,4%). Duration of hemodialysis wassignificantly associated with seropositivity. Theduration of hemodialysis less than 1 year had a higherprevalence of anti-HCV positive (67,6%) compared toanti-HCV negative (32,4%). Duration of hemodialysisbetween 1 year to 3 years had a higher prevalence ofanti-HCV positive (81,6) compared to anti-HCV negative(18,4%). The hemodialysis longer than 3 years had ahigher prevalence of anti-HCV positive (94,0%) comparedto anti-HCV negative(6,0%). Conclusion: Patients in the Dialysis Unit of Dr.Sardjito General Hospital Yogyakarta have a highprevalence of HCV infection. The factors associatedwith HCV infection are highly suggestive of nosocomialtransmission within the hemodialysis units. Imperativeaction is required to improve infection controlmeasures in hemodialysis centres." @default.
