- W1035969948 abstract "Publisher Summary Flavins are photoreduced by various substrates including amines, amino acids, alcohols, and reduced pyridine nucleotides under anaerobic conditions. This chapter discusses the photochemistry of flavins. The disproportion rate of flavin semiquinones is measured by flash photolysis. Photochemical methods are used: to generate flavin semiquinones and dihydroquinones both in the free state and in flavoproteins; to study the triplet states of flavins and their interactions with a variety of aromatic compounds; to measure the dissociation of flavin coenzymes from the apoprotein; and to investigate reactions that may serve as models for flavoprotein catalysis. All photoreductions must be performed under anaerobic conditions because reduced flavins react rapidly with oxygen. There are three main ways to follow flavin concentrations: spectrophotometry, spectrofluorometry, and polarography. In a photochemical reaction, the reactive species may be either an excited singlet or a triplet of the chromophore. One or more of the following methods may distinguish these: quenching experiments, lifetime calculations, or intermediates. Photoreaction between flavins and phenylacetic acid leads to the formation of adducts." @default.
