- W1036141406 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents an overview of the studies of a novel antiselectin monoclonal antibody (mAb) that binds both E- and L-selectin and effectively blocks the function of both molecules. A brief and noncomprehensive review of the historical background of the selectins is presented in the chapter. L-selectin is the primary focus because of the extensive work with this molecule, but a brief review of E- and P-selectin is also provided in the chapter. The control of the inflammatory process is necessary in the treatment of many infectious and noninfectious diseases. Leukocyte migration into tissues is the hallmark of inflammation and if this process can be inhibited, inflammation can be prevented. The characterization of the selectins has led to tremendous advances in the understanding of the process of leukocyte extravasation and has given clues to the design of novel anti-inflammatory drugs. The next step is the testing of these new treatments in different models of inflammation. It may be that in the near future inhibitors of selectins can be used to treat arthritis, pericarditis, reperfusion injury, transplant rejection, and many other inflammatory processes in humans." @default.
