- W10362215 abstract "ABSTRACT Using the experimental data in literature, Peierls-Nabarro (P-N) stresses have been estimated by extrapolating the yield stress to the absolute-zero temperature. The normalized P-N stress τp/G (G: the shear modulus) has been found to be correlated with the crystal-geometrical parameter of the slip system h/b (h: the lattice spacing of the slip plane; b: the magnitude of the Burgers vector), exhibiting an order-of-magnitude agreement with the classical Peierls-Nabarro representation: τp/G = 2/ (1-ν) ·exp[-2πh/ (1-ν)b], where ν is the Poisson ratio. This fact indicates that the P-N stress is primarily determined by the crystal geometry. The theory of the Peierls mechanism based on the smooth kink model predicts that the total activation enthalpy of deformation is related to the P-N stress by Ho/(Kb3) ≃ (d/b)3/2x (τp/K)1/2, where K is the line-tension factor of the dislocation, d the period of the Peierls potential. For bcc metals and alkali-halide crystals, this relation has been found to be approximately satisfied. Also, τy-T relation near the absolute zero temperature in these crystals obeys the relation τp - τy ∝ T4/5 which is predicted in the smooth kink model. These facts indicate the validity of application of the smooth kink model to the above crystals. In covalent crystals, however, the abrupt kink model seems more appropriate to describe the deformation." @default.
