- W103626235 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes recent trends in the physiology of domesticated animals. From the physiologist's point of view, some species had been slightly neglected for a period of time. Animals such as swine, poultry, and horse are now the object of a revived interest. Enzymatic digestion and gastrointestinal transit in swine are actively investigated at Jouy-en Oosas (France), whereas thermal regulation is extensively studied at Babraham (UK). Sophisticated equipment is being used in Scandinavia for the detailed study of respiratory function, cardiovascular adaptation, and metabolic adjustments in horses during training. Useful information may be gained by comparison with data obtained from human athletes. Many of the physiological functions of domestic birds are poorly understood. The motility of the complex oviduct of the hen has been studied, mainly by electromyographic methods. The effects of oxytocin, oestrogens, and progesterone on the electrical activity of isolated strips from the different parts of the oviduct of the hen have been described. Prostaglandin formation from arachidonic acid was also studied by the incubation of tissue samples from the reproductive tract of the laying hen." @default.
