- W103626307 abstract "Higher plants contain two specialised transport tissues: xylem and phloem. Tracheary elements in the xylem serve the transport of water and inorganic ions from the root system to the shoot, whereas the sieve elements in the phloem are responsible for the translocation of organic solutes (mostly sucrose and a mixture of amino acids) from ‘source’ (typically the fullgrown, photosynthesising leaf) to ‘sink’ (young leaves, roots, fruits and seeds). Developing seeds store large amounts of starch, lipids and reserve proteins, which are synthesised from the organic solutes translocated in the sieve elements. Because this translocation is by a pressure-flow mechanism (Munch 1930), considerable amounts of water (Munch water) are co-translocated with the organic solutes, which may give rise to the circulation of water within the tissues of the ‘sink’ (Jenner et al., 1988)." @default.
