- W1036453 abstract "Details of the new linear electron accelerator of the I. V. Kurchatov Institute are described. The energy of the machine, designed at the Radiotechnical Institute, ranges from 25 to 32 Mev; it has a pulse current of 200 ma and pulse durations of 0.6, 0.2, and 0.05 msec with a frequencies up to 100 hertz. The energy of the high-frequency field is transformed into electron energy with a frequency of 30 to 35%. A klystron is used as the high-frequency source; the vacuum is maintained by means of Ti getters. The current pulses injected are generated by a 3-electrode gun. The accelerated electron beam falls on a U target, the bremsstrahlung of which generated fast neutrons by ( gamma ,n) and ( gamma ,f) reactions; the neutrons emitted by the target have a Maxwellian distribution. The U/sup 238/ target is placed in a cylindrical container filled with water serving as moderator. The experiments carried out include measurement of the current and the spectrum of the accelerated electrons and the determination of the radial distribution of the current density within the beam. The energy spectrum measurements were carried out by the time-of-flight method at a distance of 109 m in themore » energy range from 4 ev to 30 kev.
