- W103665785 abstract "This chapter describes biosynthesis and release of catecholamines. Some interesting considerations concerning the significance of the catecholamine stores come from the studies with inhibitors of tyrosine hydroxylase. One of these inhibitors, α-methyl-tyrosine, and produces marked inhibition of adrenaline synthesis is normal starting from dopa, and the storage of catecholamines is unaffected. When α-methyl-tyrosine is administered to animals, catecholamine levels fall most rapidly in those tissues that synthesize them most rapidly. Brain noradrenaline and dopamine that turn over most rapidly are lowered first and to the greatest extent. Consistent with these observations, the most prominent effects in animals are on the central nervous system. Although most tissue stores can be totally depleted with high doses of the inhibitor, marked effects are seen with lower doses when much of the peripheral noradrenaline is still present. The effects seen with the lowest doses are abolition of the shock-avoidance response and other disturbances in behavior." @default.
