- W103695469 abstract "As part of a growing interest in the psychobiological foundations of human behaviour, psychotherapists have become increasingly interested in the application of psychophysiological approaches to intervention. Therapies as diverse as psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy, behaviour modification, biofeedback, autogenic training, hypnosis, feeling therapy and progressive relaxation have all been used clinically or experimentally in conjunction with some form of psychophysiological assessment or treatment. This spurt of interest in psychobiology as it applies to psychotherapy is seen in several recent developments within psychology and medicine. Formal training in clinical psychophysiology is now offered in a substantial number of graduate programmes in clinical psychology and clinical internships in the United States (Feuerstein and Schwartz, 1977). The establishment of the interdisciplinary field of behavioural medicine, and the new sub-discipline of health psychology, within the last few years, has provided conferences and journals as an outlet for research and theory concerned with the interface of biology and behaviour change. A new “biopsychosocial” orientation towards traditionally medical or psychiatric disorders has been proposed (Engel, 1977; Leigh and Reiser, 1980), integrating biological, psychological and social dimensions of health and illness. This chapter will review the current status of the contribution of psychophysiology to the field of psychotherapy. The focus will be on the more recent theoretical and empirical advances in this area, with an emphasis on a general systems, psychobiological perspective on psychotherapy (Schwartz, 1978). The problems and limitations of a psychophysiological view of psychotherapy will be explored and speculation about the potential future course of this topic will be presented." @default.
