- W1037954527 abstract "Conventional steel rebars are widely used in reinforced concrete structures. They have numerous mechanical advantages such as high stiffness, strength and low cost as well as their wide-spread availability. However, they also present some disadvantages, such as low chemical resistance to corrosion, and their metallic nature that create challenges for structures that require non-magnetic construction. In recent years, fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composite rebars have been developed to address some of the aforementioned shortcomings. Amongst the various ways to produce these rebars, some researchers utilized a combination of braiding and pultrusion techniques. In this combined technique, a unidirectional-continuous fibers core are is encapsulated by one or more layers of braided fiber preforms. One of the major challenges in broader commercialization of FRP rebars are their limitation in continuous, fast and mass production resulting from long curing times. Depending on the type of the resin that is used, curing of the conventional resins may take up to hours at room temperature. This time can be reduced if the curing is done at elevated temperatures in autoclaves or ovens; however, this poses considerable problems in terms of additional handling, storing and overall production time for these rebars. Literature suggests use of electron beam and high frequency microwaves for fast curing in composite materials; however, these techniques also have shortcomings, such as high costs and potential problems with certain fibers (e.g. arcing of carbon fibers), respectively." @default.
