- W1039550740 abstract "When beginning my research on the Finnish history of social work, my understanding of how things work in social work convinced me that I should not separate the developments of knowledge from the ongoing processes of practice. Social work has always been more a matter of practical work than a discipline or a field for scholars or spectacular discourses. But nevertheless, knowledge about social work is undoubtedly an elementary aspect of practice that contributes to implementing social control and social support (e.g. Foucault 1982). Thus, I regard it as my aim to understand and reconstruct a world that is real and functioning — not only a world that only exists ‘in theory’.
