- W104003011 abstract "Wilhelm’s way of life changed in many ways when he moved to Pulkovo; one of the most striking of these changes was his withdrawal from active observation. “From 1843 on” Otto tells us “Father’s personal participation in observing became rarer”.1 To be sure, in that very year he led a chronometer expedition to determine the longitude difference between Pulkovo and Altona, and he continued for some years to use “his” prime-vertical instrument, as Bond’s and Airy’s accounts show (Chapter 7), for the determination of the constants of nutation and aberration. Apart from this, however, he made very little use of the splendid equipment that he had provided for the Central Observatory. No doubt the administration of this new institute, with its large staff, absorbed much of his time and energy at first --although he soon began to hand that over to Otto, and at least did not have extra responsibilities like the supervision of the Cathedral Park or of the University Fire Service, that he had had at Dorpat. Undoubtedly, Wilhelm withdrew from observing partly in order to publish his earlier work. The Mensurae Micrometricae was published just before the move to Pulkovo, but the third volume of Wilhelm’s great trilogy on double stars -the Positiones mediae of 1852- in which he gave accurate positions for all the double stars in the 1827 Catalogus Novus, occupied him soon afterwards. Then he set to work on the three-volume account of the arc measurement (Chapter 4), having produced the Description and Etudes* d’astronomie stellaire while he was still working on the Positiones mediae. It is almost as if Wilhelm sensed that his time was limited and that he must work hard to complete his major projects while he could. There may have been one other factor: Wilhelm was nearly fifty years old and perhaps his eyesight was no longer equal to the accurate measurement of double stars. If this were so, he might well have preferred to make no such observations at all, rather than to publish ones that would compromise his reputation. While there is no record that he complained of deteriorating eyesight, his son Otto did after he had turned fifty2 --and there is a strong hereditary trait in these matters." @default.
