- W1040081029 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of the metal constituents of petroleum and outlines the chemical and physical studies of petroleum asphaltenes. The procedure by which asphaltenes are separated, not only dictates asphaltene yield, but can also dictate the quality of the fraction. Although asphaltenes produce high yields of thermal coke, little is known of the actual chemistry of coke formation; the chemistry of asphaltene coking is suggested to involve the thermolysis of thermally-labile bonds to form reactive species, which then react with each other to form coke. It is also known that nitrogen species not only concentrate in the coke, but also contribute to the pattern of the thermolysis, for example, the presence of nitrogen in ring systems enhances the activity of adjacent carbon–hydrogen or carbon–carbon bonds to thermolysis. The use of a catalytic process for the conversion of high-asphaltene feedstocks adds another dimension to asphaltene science. Asphaltenes interact with catalysts, especially acidic support catalysts, through the basic nitrogen, just as they interact with adsorbents." @default.
