- W1040606891 abstract "This chapter discusses pyruvic acid phosphoroclastic system. Pyruvic acid is considered an important carbon source for sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). The bacterial metabolism of pyruvic acid produces either acetyl phosphate, H2, and CO2 or acetyl phosphate and formic acid. Reactions involving the production of acetyl phosphate from pyruvic acid are described as “phosphoroclastic reactions.” Phosphoroclastic reaction is associated only with the reversible transformation of pyruvic acid to acetyl phosphate, H2, and CO2. Enzymes of the phosphoroclastic reaction are localized in the cytoplasm and are constitutive in SRB. The phosphoroclastic reaction is usually conducted in 1- to 3-ml volumes, using stoppered cuvettes or tubes flushed with purified N2. Activity of the reaction can be measured by following specific substrates and products of the reaction. Reduced ferredoxin generated by the phosphoroclastic reaction may interface with thiosulfate reductase, bisulfite reductase, and other reactions in which sulfur compounds are used as electron acceptors by the SRB . An important product of the phosphoroclastic reaction is the generation of molecular hydrogen as it represents a most efficient means of electron consumption. The metabolism of molecular hydrogen by SRB is important because most can use H2 as an electron donor to support growth." @default.
