- W1041451337 abstract "This chapter describes inositol phospholipids and cellular signaling. In animal cells there are three major myo-inositol-containing phospholipids: (1) phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns), (2) phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate (PtdIns 4-P), and (3) phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate(PtdIns 4,5-P2). The polyphosphorylated inositides generally constitute 1–10% of total inositol lipids, which are themselves 6–10% of total phospholipids. The polyphosphoinositides are considered to be located on the cytoplasmic side of the plasma membrane, which places them in an ideal position to play a role in signal transduction. In a number of cell types the receptor and phosphodiesterase may be coupled by GTP-binding proteins in an analogous manner to the systems operating through cAMP as a second messenger. Cytosolic Ca2+ may be mobilized from either intracellular stores or from the extracellular compartment or both. The mobilization of calcium from intracellular stores is an important source of activator Ca2+ following stimulation of many different cells, including oocytes, Swiss 3T3 cells, insulin-secreting β-cells, liver, and smooth muscle." @default.
