- W104147220 abstract "The question of whether observed behavior is a function of genetics, experience, or some combination has interested people for more than two millennia. The best way to understand this ‘dilemma’ is to view behavior as a product of proximate and ultimate processes. Proximate causation refers to processes that are internal to the organism and its development. These processes, products of the interaction of genetics and the environment, are the tools with which animals play the evolutionary game – their phenotype. Ultimate causation is concerned with explorations of the functional aspects of behavior in relation to ecology, with fitness as a measure of success. This article looks at proximate and ultimate causation as they pertain to animal behavior from a historical perspective." @default.
