- W104348485 abstract "PREFACE n The selection of the Fire Brigade in Western Australia for this studynwas based on two major factors. First, it was a reasonably smallnsystem with clear boundaries and therefore capable of being investigatednby one individual with little or no research assistance and anfull-time administrative job. Second, the writer had a close rapportnwith the two individuals mainly concerned with representing theirnrespective organizations in the industrial relations system. As annadded bonus, some months after the study commenced my wife becamenindustrial research officer at the Fire Brigade. It is thereforennot surprising that my major debts so far as access to material is concernednare to Mr C. Britton, Administration and EstablishmentsnOfficer, and Mrs D.I. Dufty, Industrial Research Officer, both of thenWestern Australian Fire Brigades Board, and to Mr W.S. Latter, secretarynof both the firemen's and officers' unions. I was also helpednby discussions with the late Mr C. Campbell (then chairman) andnMessrs Turnbull and Dubberlin (members) of the Fire BrigadesnBoard and Mr J. Carrigg of the Public Service Board. Acknowledgementnmust be made of the co-operation of members of both unionsnin agreeing to the interview study and of the students who carriednout the interviewing. Messrs Viehle and Chadwick were helpful innthe early stages of the data collection, but my major debt in thisnrespect is to Mr Brian Hayward, whose assistance in the study of thenunions' operation was invaluable. Mr Hayward's ability to establishnclose rapport with the union officers and members and his willingnessnto contribute generously of his own time to this end cannot benovervalued. Commissioners Collier and Cort were kind enough toncheck the material in chapter 6 for accuracy, and both Dr S.J. Woodnof the London School of Economics and Dr A.N.J. Blain of thenUniversity of Western Australia made valuable comments onnchapter 1. Mrs R. Holman typed the original and revised manuscriptnwith her usual patience and skill. As is customary, all the above arenabsolved from any blame; all of this, along with any royalties, accruento the author. n The main substance of chapers 1, 4 and 5 has appeared in thenworking paper series of the Institute of Labour Studies at FlindersnUniversity of South Australia.n" @default.
