- W104489978 abstract "This thesis has three aims. The first and most important aim is to identify and examine thenrhetorical strategies contained or reflected in testimonial stories associated with the debatenover the ordination of women in the Sydney Anglican Diocese. This analysis is undertakennwith a view to revealing how language use in the stories carries motives of its own -nmotives that are often deeply embedded in the text. The study seeks to identify the powernof the language used to move the reader for particular purposes.n Arising from the first aim of the thesis are the two secondary aims. The first of these is tonconsider the form and function of the testimonial story, and its significance in the debatenover the ordination of women in Sydney. The third aim is to confirm the cluster-agonnmethodology, which is the analytical approach utilised in the thesis, as a tool suitable fornthe rhetorical analysis of non-traditional, contemporary texts such as the testimonial story.n Chapter 1 begins by justifying a critical study of the rhetorical strategies used in the debatenover the ordination of women in Sydney. This is followed by an examination of the historynof the debate, and the nature of the Sydney Anglican Diocese and its significance innAustralia and internationally.n Chapter 2 comprises consideration of the structure, function and rhetorical significance ofnthe testimonial stories comprising the text sample. Comparison of a variety of anecdotalnstories enables the distilling of characteristics of the testimonial story as a definitive textual genre. These characteristics include narrative fragmentation, and the centrality of thenprotagonist in the stories. In particular, it is suggested that the centrality of the protagonistnreflects the value that is being increasingly placed upon notions of agency and thenrevitalising of the subject in contemporary society. The testimonial story is described asnboth representative and constitutive in function.n The theory underpinning the cluster-agon methodology, the analytical approach taken in thenthesis, is explained in Chapter 3. This includes discussion of Burke's suggestion that thenmost direct route to the study of human attitudes, motives and worldviews is through anmethodological inquiry that examines the juxtaposition or associational clustering of wordsnor ideas around the key terms or constructs that comprise texts.n Analysis of the texts using the cluster-agon methodology is undertaken in Chapters 4, 5, 6nand 7. Key terms and constructs are examined to reveal a variety of rhetorical strategies, nincluding hierarchy, mystification, transcendence, and techniques used in advertising andnthe deliberative debate. It is proposed that the strategies used by the anti-ordinationnmovement, as represented in the testimonial stories it has produced, have led to the de-legitimisation,neven nullification of the arguments of the pro-ordination movement. Thenmarginalisation of the debate is posited as a very real consequence of this process. Innconclusion, the implications of these rhetorical strategies are discussed in light of theninfluence of the Sydney Anglican Diocese both locally and internationally.nn" @default.
