- W104799265 abstract "One of the striking features of the nervous system is the precise and ordered way in which separate populations of neurons become connected. In sensory systems, where spatial resolution of input is important, afferent nerve fibers project from the receptor structure to targets centrally, where their synaptic terminals are arranged in a pattern that is topologically equivalent to their cells of origin in the periphery. Thus, the visual field is mapped topographically in the tectum of the midbrain in lower vertebrates, where the distribution of optic terminals reflects the arrangement of ganglion cells in the eye. A question of fundamental interest is how the retinal projection is arranged during early development. The anatomical studies described in this chapter, show that the topography of the retinal projection in Xenopus laevis is ordered from the beginning of tectal innervation." @default.
