- W105020797 abstract "Neurosurgical procedures may ameliorate otherwise intractable cancer pain, improve the quality of life, and reduce, or even eliminate, the need for narcosis. A wide variety of ablative and augumentative neurosurgical options exists; each procedure is defined by specific indications, strengths, and limitations. Patient selection is of paramount importance, for in no other clinical situation is the multidimensional nature of pain more apparent than in the setting of malignancy [1,2]. Preexisting fear of unrelenting pain from malignancy may be intense [3], and suffering may be compounded by the depression and anxiety [4] that attend verification of mortality; disability may be more clearly related to angst, to treatment, and to pain than to tumor burden [5,6]. If suffering is primarily a function of anxiety and depression, surgical procedures directed toward interruption of neural pain pathways are destined to fail to afford relief. Similarly, pain arising from nonmalignant sources is rarely appropriately addressed by ablative procedures in patients with cancer." @default.
