- W105139478 abstract "This chapter discusses the immunological role of macrophage- and lymphocyte-derived amplification factors. Both macrophages (MØ) and lymphocytes produce lymphoproliferative factors. These or closely related factors enhance a wide variety of in vitro immunological reactions by promoting lymphocyte differentiation, maturation, and function. Macrophages produce the lymphocyte activating factor (LAF). MØ are stimulated to produce more LAF when activated by a wide variety of stimulants, including adjuvants such as extracts of tubercle bacilli, endotoxin, phorbol myristic acetate, and a dialyzable extract of human lymphocytes containing the transfer factor. Lectin or antigen-activated lymphocytes or mediators made by the activated lymphocytes also stimulate MØ to produce the LAF. Thus, this pathway may serve to rapidly augment inflammatory reactions. Supernatants or chromatography fractions containing human LAF may increase in vitro immunological reactions by stimulating the proliferation of mouse thymocytes and human peripheral T lymphocytes, by increasing the reactivity of stimulator and responder lymphocytes in the MLR, by promoting thymocyte differentiation, by increasing T helper cell promotion of antibody production, and by the activation of lymphokine production. Activated lymphocytes also produce lymphoproliferative factors that appear to be biochemically distinct from MØ-derived factors." @default.
