- W105219519 abstract "Sarcopenia, skeletal muscle loss with advancing age, leads to muscular weakness and reduced physical functions. It was reported that the high-leucine essential amino acid mixture (HLEAA, 11 g twice a day) supplementation increased lean body mass (LBM) and physical functions in non-sarcopenic elderly subjects. We conducted the randomized-controlled trial to determine if HLEAA reverses sarcopenia in older subjects who actually have sarcopenic characteristics, i.e. reduced muscle mass and strength. The sarcopenic subjects were selected from 1,399 female participants, living at home in Tokyo and aged over 75 years, who had attended a comprehensive geriatric health check. The inclusion criteria were relative muscle mass (muscle mass/height2) ≤ 30th percentile, muscle strength (maximum knee extension power) ≤30th percentile, and BMI ≤ 25. 78 subjects were randomly allocated to a HLEAA group or a control group. The subjects assigned to the HLEAA group ingested 3 g of HLEAA two times a day for 3 months. The control group subjects only received a general health promoting lecture every month. 23 and 27 subjects completed the trial in the HLEAA group and the control group respectively. LBM was significantly increased in the HLEAA group (1.39 ± 0.22 kg, p < 0.001), and no change was observed in the control group (0.42 ± 0.41 kg). Maximum knee extension power was unchanged in both groups, but usual walking speed and maximum walking speed were significantly increased only in the HLEAA group. We conclude that relatively smaller dose (3 g twice a day) HLEAA ingestion for 3 months increases LBM and physical functions in apparent sarcopenic elderly women." @default.
