- W105703089 abstract "One of the strongest impressions we receive from the works of great writers is that of a world of their own, where the tone, style, manner, and vision cohere. The sense of distinct personality is perhaps the least hazardous way of characterizing a truly creative talent, for as one goes down the ladder of genius, the more the sense of distinctive creative per? sonality seems to dissolve into something general and even anonymous. It would seem that one of the most serious tasks criticism could set itself would be to seize and characterize such distinctiveness. Yet one of the most distressing realities of contemporary criticism is not only the failure of capturing this mark of the writer, but a kind of determined effort to avoid confronting it. These five books are different in approach, in ends pursued, and very different in quality. Yet all of them, in one way or another, fail to capture the distinctive fields of visions or mode of artistic thinking that goes on in the works of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. It is perhaps unfair to charge any? one with not seizing the distinctive essence of writers as great and com? plex as Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. But it is discouraging to see that most believe that it is not a task important enough to try. No two works could be more different in approach and in quality than the critical studies of Elizabeth Gunn and R. F. Christian. The first is eccentric and impressionistic and a pastiche of reveries, musings, and moods; Christian's work is thoroughly researched and written from a wide knowledge of Russian and European literary history. One is per? sonal and subjective and the other impersonal and objective; one a poor book and the other a good book; yet both, in their own ways, disperse a center in Tolstoy that is strong and unified. Miss Gunn does not know Russian, nor Russian literature nor Russian history. Nor has she bothered, to judge from her references, to become acquainted with what" @default.
