- W105754648 abstract "The burgeoning West Indian Central American literature accords a special respect and recognition to women's special role as leaders, consistent not only with all other West Indian literature, but with the essential tenor of African cultures and civilizations. There appears, however, a gap between theory and practice as the proclaimers of woman's greatness are primarily men.1 The question that must be posed is whether this gap springs from an internal contradiction—hypocrisy—or from an internal one, i.e., historical forces entirely beyond the control of West Indian Central Americans, a nondominant ethnolinguistic minority group (black West Indians, a majori ty group in their respective territories and Islands, have only recently begun to take control of their societies). This paper examines the theme of libera tion in the work of Eulalia Bernard for an answer to this question In his introduction to Bernard's first book, Ritmoheroe,2 Quince Dun can asserts: El papel de la mujer se agiganta en todas las culturas en que la tierra es la base de la economia (18). Cheikh Anta Diop, the renowned Senalagese scientist, historian, Egyptologist, and thinker, suggests that the especially important role women have enjoyed in African societies is the result of their discovering and harnessing of agriculture. In support of his claim Diop, cites the predominance of matriarchal systems as characteriz ed by the collaboration and harmonious flowering of both sexes, and by a certain preeminence of women in society, due originally to economic condi tions, but accepted and even defended by man.3 Further supporting evidence lies in the fact that whereas there has been an absence of queens in Greek, Roman, or Persian history.... In contrast during those epochs, queens were frequent in Black Africa. Along with the example of Queen Candace of Meroitic Sudan, who resisted the colonizing armies of Augustus Caesar,4 there are those of the Ashanti Queen Yaa Asantewa and Queen" @default.
