- W105806927 abstract "Uranyl nitrate abolishes the uptake of oxygen associated with glucose utilization by conidia of Neurospora sitophila approximate ED/sub 50/ is 1.0 f UO/sub 2/ g per 10/sup 5/ spores. Endogenous oxygen uptake is not, however, affected by the presence of uranium the respiratory quotient with glucose drops to the endogenous level. Phosphate reverses the uranium effect on glucose respiration. Anaerobic glucose respiration is about 20 times as sensitive to uranium as is aerobic respiration. The oxidation of acetate and ethanol is little affected by uranium at a concentration inhibiting over 80 percent of glucose respiration. These effects of uranyl ion on glucose respiration are ascribed to a blocking of the uptake of glucose at or near the aurface of the spore. Mercuric chloride at very low concentration inhibits the oxidation of glucose more than it inhibits endogenous respiration, but, unlike uranyl ion, even slightly higher concentrations abolish all respiratory activity. The data in general emphasize that any assay of fungitoxicity based on respiratory responses must take into account the substrate of respiration. (auth)" @default.
