- W105851983 abstract "la GOOD deal has been said, not a little of it without too /Jk much critical reflection, on the relationship of Eugene A. JL. O'NeilPs plays to Greek tragedy, more particularly of course the Mourning Becomes Electra which is an intentional parallel to the trilogy of Aeschylus. The Greeks were mentioned in connection with O'Neill, however, before he wrote his tale of the house of Mannon and it would be pertinent to discuss his relationship to them had he never deliberately set out to restate one of their great themes in modern terms. It has always seemed to me that in spite of the long labors of great scholars we know less about Greek tragedy than we sometimes assume we do. These tragedies were stage plays primarily in their own day almost exclusively and their effect on an audience was undoubtedly quite different from any effect they could possibly achieve today (or I certainly hope so, from some performances I have endured! ). How far the choral passages created an operatic effect now lost I doubt if anyone can say for certain, nor can anyone be certain how far the religious origins of tragedy imposed their mood, together with the religious implications inherent in the familiar themes employed. The slight parallel with the early mystery plays is a dangerous one to invoke because the medieval audience of Europe was a long way from the audience in the Athens of Pericles; its naive faith was probably greater but its naive interest in sheer story was probably greater, too. It was much riper for mimetic realism. Yet even in Athens tragedy moved from the almost impersonal characterization of Aeschylus to the comparative realism of Euripides in two generations. And Greek comedy, certainly, was far from impersonal or lacking in realistic detail." @default.
