Besides determining the evaporation components for use in water resource studies, the model also calculates the throughfall and stemflow. The transpiration is computed for each period when the canopy is dry using the Monteith-Penman formula with a simple relationship between surface resistance and time of day, based on micrometeorological measurements made over a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L) forest near Thetford in Eastern England. The interception component calculations use the Rutter model which determines the running water balance of the canopy whenever it is wet. The evaporation of the intercepted water is calculated by the Monteith-Penman formula (with the surface resistance set to zero) multiplied by the ratio of the current amount of water present on the canopy to the amount needed to saturate the canopy. The output from the model has been compared with measurements of throughfall and stemflow made in Thetford Forest during 1975 and 1976. Over the total period of twenty-one 4-week periods the disagreement was less than 8 per cent." @default.
