- W10633192 abstract "/commercial plantations have been in operation along the ^ lower slopes of Mount Cameroon for over eighty years. During the German Colonial Period (1884-19 14), the plantations on Mount Cameroon were among the most prosperous in West Africa, and, without question, they form the most important economic entity in presentday West Cameroon. For the past nineteen years, most of the plantation estates have been managed by the Cameroons Development Corporation, a statutory corporation chartered in 1947 by the British Government. Jurisdiction over it was assumed by the Federal Republic of Cameroon in 196 1, after independence was attained, but the Londonbased Commonwealth Development Corporation, which has been in charge of the Cameroon Development Corporation since 1959, were asked to continue as managers. Politically, the plantations lie mostly within Victoria Division, the southernmost administrative unit in West Cameroon (Fig. 1). Victoria Division is dominated by Mount Cameroon, the only active volcano in West Africa. Within this century, it has erupted in 1909, 1922 and 1959. There was some volcanic activity in 1954, but no eruption. The peak of the mountain, locally called Fako, is the highest point in West Africa, towering 13,352 feet above the sea. Of all the high mountains of Africa, it is the only one which extends to sea-level. Mount Cameroon has the appearance of a whale-backed mass, the long axis trending SW-NE for about 28 miles. It is a typical strato-volcano, which despite its elevation, is not impressive because its base is so broad (30 by 21 miles).1 It was most probably formed in the Cretaceous Period, and it is a part of the volcanic belt that extends from Ascension, Principe, Sao Tome and Fernando Po in the Atlantic, through the Manenguba Highlands and the Bamenda Plateau almost to Lake Chad. The mountain is almost entirely surrounded by territory lying below 400-feet elevation. (Fig. 2). The vegetation and climate vary considerably with elevation (Fig. 3)." @default.
