- W106403003 abstract "This is an attempt to apply the hermeneutical approach to the analysis and interpretation of English compositions written by three Spanish students of English as a second language, a research approach not commonly applied to the construction of knowledge in second-language acquisition. The article also deals with the nature of hermeneutical knowledge and follows the steps of all hermeneutical inquiry: identifying relevant texts, validating texts, seeking patterns in the texts, explaining these patterns and generating an interpretation, relating new interpretation to existing interpretations, and dissemination to a wider audience. Following previous works in first language done by Kinneavy (1971) y North (1986 y 1987), the article explores three interrelated contexts in student writings: 1) rhetorical context ‐students writing for an audience with a specific communicative purpose‐, 2) situational and cultural context ‐students writing with their own social and personal reasons and with their own voices‐, and 3) disciplinary and intertextual context-students writing in the context of a the discipline of English composition whose boundaries are determined by the teacher and the course: Creatividad Narrativa y Produccion de Textos en Lengua Inglesa. The article finally tries to show how the hermeneutical approach can reveal the students’ voices and supply a tool to gain access to their conscience as they are expressed in the universe of written words as if they were written by canonised authors." @default.
