- W106443795 abstract "The processes that set up families thus regulate the supply of capital which is a contributory factor to the continuity of any social system. This article deals with the Urhobo of the Midwestern State of Nigeria among whom families are set up through processes involving marital and non-marital relation ships. The non-marital relationship consists of ose, often temporary but not casual socially approved cohabitation of man and woman, and of obevwemikpo, an ose living with the man. Each type of relationship could be terminated at any time or transformed into marriage. The marital relationship, generally called orovwe, could be set up through normal choice of spouse, gift marriage or widow in heritance. In each case, the marriage relationship comes into effect and becomes legal when the bride wealth is paid, and more importantly, when gin is offered to the ancestors of the couple and consumed by their living representatives in a public ceremony. Any child born through any of these relationships, marital or non-marital, is a legal child of the family within which there is primacy for lineage solidarity rather than for conjugal solidarity. Marital and non-marital relationships are desired by men to set up families to validate and consolidate their adulthood, independence and socio-economic status and to avoid ridicule arising from the performance of inevitable female economic activities. Because marriage institutions are man-made and show socio-cultural relativity, they do not lend themselves to definitions in terms of universal categories." @default.
