- W10651004 abstract "This report describes progress made on Connecticut's strategic plan to ensure racial and ethnic diversity. Connecticut's public colleges and universities are becoming more diverse every year, and 2001 was no exception. The overall numbers of students, graduates, and professional employees from minority groups are higher than ever, although distinct pockets of underrepresentation remain for particular types of study and in the employment ranks. In 2001, the share of undergraduates from underrepresented minority groups reached nearly a quarter, 22.5%, of all public college students. As minority enrollment climbed, so did their share of degree completion. The share of minorities among three professional workforce categories has grown from 6.8% in 1983 to 15.2% in 2001. Hispanic and Latino students continue to lag behind their comparable percentage in the state's population. The majority of minority students remain clustered in the state's community colleges, and, although minority graduation rates are higher than ever, they are still below those of the state's population as a whole. African Americans and Hispanic/Latinos are still represented among professional staff at a percentage lower than their representation in the state's population. The Connecticut Minority Advancement Program, which is designed to reduce these participation and attainment gaps for minority students, is described, and three of its initiatives are outlined.
