- W10651498 abstract "Biotechnology is often sold as a cure-all for our pest problems. However, if we have learned anything from the “rise and fall” of chemical insecticides, it should be that the evolution of pest species can frustrate mankind’s best laid technological solutions. Already, there is evidence that cultivars genetically engineered to be resistant to herbivores or pathogens may be useful for only brief time periods as a result of pest evolution. Fortunately, insights from evolutionary biology point towards strategies for deploying transgenic plants that could enhance their durability by impeding the evolution of virulence among those species that attack the genetically engineered cultivars. Importantly, the translation of this theoretical insight into practical action will require information best supplied by molecular genetics -- information on the molecular basis of virulence versus avirulence, information on mutation rates and the likelihood of cross-resistance, and quantification of gene flow. The future of biotechnology will be as bright as advertised only if evolutionary biologists and molecular biologists join forces in planning the design of agroecosystems." @default.
