- W106692950 abstract "This chapter discusses the molecular mechanisms of estrogen and thyroid hormone action. Bone is an important target tissue of both estrogens and thyroid hormones. During puberty, estrogens act to cause closure of the epiphyseal plates in females, terminating axial growth of the long bones. In the adult female, estrogens play an important role in maintaining bone mass, as evidenced by accelerated rates of bone resorption in the postmenopausal state. Thyroid hormones also influence bone development and metabolism. Congenital hypothyroidism results in several developmental abnormalities, including decreased axial growth of the long bones. In adults, thyroid hormone excess causes accelerated bone loss and represent an important cause of osteoporosis. Although the mechanisms by which estrogens and thyroid hormones influence specific aspects of bone metabolism are poorly understood, significant progress has been made in defining the mechanisms responsible for estrogen and thyroid hormone action at the molecular level. Both estrogens and thyroid hormones exert their principal effects on patterns of gene expression by binding to specific receptors that are members of a superfamily of ligand-dependent transcription factors." @default.
