- W107162733 abstract "We study security of mobile code at a linguistic level. In particular, we tackle the problem of designing expressive and efficient models for access control, as well as improving the performance of existing mechanisms. Static analysis is the main technical tool we use in order to enforce and optimise the security of programs. We begin our study with stack inspection, the access control model adopted by Java and C. We propose a data flow analysis which safely approximates the access rights granted to code at run-time. This provides us with the basis for program transformations that reduce the run-time overhead of stack inspection. These optimizations also include interprocedural program transformations like method inlining. One novel feature of our static analysis is that it is parametric with respect to the security policy in force, so it needs not to be recomputed when the access rights are dynamically updated. Our static analysis allows for transformations that work also in the presence of dynamic linking. Stack inspection has some drawbacks, the most important being the fact that the call stack is only an approximation of the security-relevant activities carried out in a program execution. To cope with these limitations, we then study history-based access control. To do that, we extend the λ-calculus with novel constructs to express and enforce local security policies. These are safety and liveness properties of the execution history, and their scope, possibly nested, can be localized in time. We also consider a construct for invoking code in a secure manner, by requesting the safety and liveness properties it must respect during execution. We define a type and effect system that extracts from a program a history expression, i.e. a correct approximation to the set of histories obtainable at run-time. Validity of history expressions is non-regular, because the scope of policies can be nested. Nevertheless, we transform history expressions so to make verification possible through standard model checking techniques. A program will never fail at run-time if its history expression is checked valid at compile-time." @default.
