- W1079158 abstract "Fitting its title, is gleaning of stories left behind by Tomds Rivera upon his death in 1984. Since 1971, literary critics have focused much attention on Rivera's ... y no se lo trago la tierra. provides more long-awaited prose material. This posthumously published collection connects with his earlier prize-winning novel since two of the stories were originally intended for that work, and the stories, with one exception, are similar in theme and setting. Harvest, edited by Julidn Olivares, is comprised of six stories, four of which were previously published, and fragment from an unfinished novel. is very slim volume; this bilingual edition covers fewer than 134 pages; in fact, the English text is but forty-three scarcely filled pages. Nevertheless, the stories themselves evoke great deal, as Rivera renders his well-crafted stories with an economy of detail?a tech nique used in ... y no se lo trago la tierra. reader wishes the stories were more cohesive like .. .y no selo trago la tierra, but then these are short stories, not novel, and this is not collection that Rivera put together, but one that was pieced together by friends and editors?and we are grateful to have something from Rivera's pen. This collection also includes prologues in Spanish and English by Rolando Hinojosa-Smith. one-page English prologue, which Hinojosa-Smith describes as a brief piece for friend about friend, relates the publication history of the stories along with personal anecdotes?in tone suggesting that Rivera is deeply missed. Spanish version of this prologue is longer, more intimate, poetic, and personal. Hinojosa-Smith writes of the task of going through Rivera's library, correspondence, notes, and prose fragments with Rivera's widow, Concha Rivera, and Frank Pino. Their search was primarily for die novel La casa grande del pueblo. A year later Julidn Olivares took up the search, and his labor has provided this edition of Rivera's work. Following Hinojosa-Smith, editor-critic Olivares offers fine introduction wherein he pro vides short biographical sketch, background information, insightful criticism, and discussion of the stories. Olivares provides Rivera's comments on his art and literature. These comments are not only of interest but extremely useful. For example, by drawing on an unpublished lec ture, Olivares explains why Fonseca was not published as part of .. .y no selo trago ... as originally planned. Equally helpful, in terms of background to the stories, and nearly as interesting, are the footnotes, which contain personal anecdotes, informal references to tele phone conversations, and letters. contains two stories, El Pete Fonseca and Eva and Daniel, that were ex cluded from .. .y no selo trago la tierra but published later. Looking for Borges and The Salamanders were also previously published. The Harvest and Zoo Island are published here in this collection for the first time. last work of the collection, Inside the Window, is" @default.
