- W108034607 abstract "Fungi occupy a vast array of habitats and utilize many different media and vectors for dispersal of their spores or other propagules—such as sclerotia, sporangia or hyphal fragments. This can involve air, water, plants—including their seeds, animals, and all kinds of organic and inorganic debris. The majority of fungi prefer wet aerobic conditions and most of those that are known in culture can be grown in liquid media. More fungi are present in the surface water than in the ground water. Fungi are less susceptible to chlorine treatment than are bacteria. Detection of fungi by the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of ergosterol is one of the techniques that has been applied to fungi from a range of different environments, including fungi from water samples. Ergosterol is a membrane lipid found in virtually all filamentous fungi. The extraction of ergosterol from a sample is simple, with the microwave-assisted method being the most convenient and widely used method." @default.
