- W108056510 abstract "Today's integrated software packages have the potential to change the way we write. Over the past ten years the computer has become an increasingly powerful tool for managing and presenting information. Word processors add a new dimension to writing. Spreadsheets perform complex calculations with ease. Databases make managing information increasingly easy. And as the graphics capabilities of hardware improve, it is increasingly easy to make graphs and charts to illustrate writing. ability to create graphics of all sorts has been available for some years. However, the recent availability of a number of powerful integrated packages has made using graphics in papers and presentations a simple task. Students no longer need to master a number of different software packages to include graphs created from a spreadsheet into a report or make illustrations that enhance a story or poem. * Graphics in Class Activities Interpreting poems and illustrating stories are only a few of the many ways that graphics can be used to enrich the educational experience of students. Linda Rathje, sixth grade teacher at da Vinci Middle School in Eugene, Ore., uses ClarisWorks from Claris Corp. in Santa Clara, Calif., for a wide variety of activities. She indicates that attendees at a school's parent's night were amazed at what the students had produced--a newsletter to which each student had contributed, printed legends on parchment paper, and display labels for artifacts and pyramids. For science reports, Rathje's students utilized both the word processor and drawing tools of ClarisWorks to explain scientific concepts. Ln regards to using graphics in their work, Rathje says, We can get the students to do things that they couldn't do with pencil and paper. For example, she found that she could tell if students understood certain optics concepts based on whether a lens was drawn backwards or correctly. For a unit on medieval times, Rathje's students studied monasteries and the importance of the church. ClarisWorks was used to design monastery floor plans, which included gardens, the chapel, living quarters and the monastery's water source. Rathje says that the floor plans are large, measuring two pages by two pages; students printed their work on laser printers, then glued the pages together and colored them with markers. Rathje further says that her sixth graders are working on a Medieval Fair. Some of the students are taking the role of medieval scribes, helping other students create their assignments for the fair such as signs, labels and written legends by using the computer. scribes help other students produce written material and graphics. Rathje says, The students work harder and are more motivated when they have a client or a recipient for their * Presentation and Design Creating products that use a variety of fonts, colors and graphics adds a new dimension to student work. What fonts should be used? How large should the text be? Where should graphics be placed to be most effective? How should borders and boxes be used to set off a block of text or a graphic? When illustrations or graphs are added to a report, how should they be presented to be most effective? Student/teacher collaboration on design issues needs to become an important part of the production of projects. For example, students working on a report on personal budgets need to decide whether they want to display their actual spreadsheet or just the numbers and headings. If they are going to include a graph or chart, they must first decide what part of the data should be displayed in graphical form. …" @default.
