- W108147258 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter reviews that the condition of pain associated with spinal injury is unlikely to have a simple mechanism that relies on a single consequence of injury. It is more probable that several components of the central injury cascade contribute to the development and maintenance of different pain states. The precise mechanism is likely to depend on the nature of the injury and the progression of pathological and biochemical changes along the rostrocaudal axis of the cord, and include anatomical and functional changes occurring in supraspinal structures. There are many possible scenarios by which the biochemical cascade initiated by injury can influence not only the progression of neuronal damage, but also changes in physiological properties responsible for the response of neurons to peripheral stimuli. It addresses potential contributing factors to the central mechanism of spinal cord injury (SCI) pain, each contributing to the anatomical and functional plasticity of spinal neurons. The chapter concludes that continued research directed toward specific components of the spinal injury cascade should provide a better understanding of spinal and supraspinal mechanisms responsible for this condition, leading to the development of novel and more effective therapeutic strategies." @default.
