- W108763092 abstract "This thesis examines the public controversy over Akademi Fantasia (AF), an adapted foreign realityTV format show screened on Malaysia’s Astro Ria Channel, which is produced by the MeasatBroadcast Network System (MBNS). The thesis discusses the globalisation of television formats andthe action taken by a developing country to preserve its cultural identity. The three main foci are: toexplore the description and production of AF; to understand the representation of cultural identity inAF; and to examine the debates about the effect of reality programs on the Malaysian constructedcultural identity. All five seasons of AF serve as a key point of reference for this thesis. I completeda small textual analysis of the programs to understand the cultural representation embedded withinthe text and archival research was utilised to understand the constructed Malaysian cultural identity. The first chapter focuses on production, format and the participants of AF. This chapter dwells atlength on the production, adaptation and modification of the content and format. It discusses the“glocalized” nature of an adapted foreign reality program. Aspects of the adaptation andmodification of AF for a particular season were also discussed. The second chapter coversrepresentations of culture and the cultural identities of AF. The chapter explores the televisionprogram as a form of media text. As a media text, each television program actually offers anopportunity to study its representation of cultural identity. The third chapter is on the Malaysianconstructed cultural identity and reflection of government policies. Government representativesargue that the cultural values contained in AF undermine the nationally constructed cultural identitythat is being promoted and endorsed by the Malaysian Government. In relation to this, the valuesthat are being promoted by the Government as the Malaysian cultural identity are identified. Thischapter also discusses the government and public debate on the alleged infusion of foreign culturalvalues via reality programs that are being aired by the local television stations, as well as thegovernment’s views on globalisation and local culture. The findings indicate that the producers ofAF project a foreign cultural identity to entice and increase viewership of the program. TheMalaysian government zealously maintains the constructed cultural identity to counter the culturaleffects of the globalisation of television formats. Thus, the debate over AF provides an opportunityto understand the contestation on the constructed Malaysian cultural identity with the increase intrading of television format. The producers of AF and government critics are using debates in thelocal media to negotiate the content and format for an adapted reality program." @default.
