- W10907580 abstract "Advancements in controlled flue gas flow and pressurization, combined with availability to commercial-sized burners capable of relatively low excess air (15 to 30%) operation, have accelerated the design of commercial boilers, which are approaching the design limit of flue gas sensible heat recovery. The author focuses on forced-draft design, primarily gas firing. Because atmospheric gas boilers must rely on natural draft and because of the higher excess air levels required in atmospheric gas firing, the full input combustion efficiency of a forced draft gas boiler can be up to 4 or 5% higher than the same size of atmospheric gas boilers. Adding auxiliary heating surface in the flue gas discharge can raise the atmospheric gas boiler's efficiency above that of the forced-draft boiler.
