- W109254005 abstract "A primary key to the increased utilization of space by all nations is low-cost space transportation. The problem is that a vast number of competing transportation system concepts are being proposed, and a system that might appear cost-effective under one scenario could be completely unacceptable economically under another. Each country needs to be able to examine its own space transportation requirements and to answer such questions as, for example, whether to depend on other nations or whether to develop its own domestic capability, or if it intends to use another nation's transportation system, which system best meets its needs. Modern computer technology can aid in this activity by permitting the synthesis of microor minicomputer-based design/cost/ economics models. A computer-aided procedure is described which aids in creating and analyzing conceptual space transportation systems. The program assists the designer by developing an optimal transportation vehicle design, analyzing the vehicle's performance characteristics, performing a mass properties analysis, and estimating the total life-cycle cost of the system. The program architecture is outlined. The individual program modules and their input and output parameters are described. The model is designed to deal with most kinds of systems (up to four stage vehicles), including expendable, partially reusable and fully reusable vehicle concepts.
