- W109287130 abstract "This chapter presents a study on the induction of the vitellogenin synthesis by estradiol-17β in shamoperated and hypophysectomized juvenile rainbow trout. Juvenile rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, approximately one year old and ranging in body weight from 40 to 100 g, were hypophysectomized or shamoperated by the buccal approach developed by Komourdjian and Idler (1977). After surgery, fish were allowed to recover in 1/3 seawater for at least ten days before polydimethylsiloxane capsules, containing 50 mg of estradiol-17β, were implanted intraperitoneally. The controls received empty capsules only. Throughout the experiment, fish were kept in fresh water with the temperature fluctuating between 10°C and 12°C and with a photoperiod of 12 h light/12 h dark. Sampling was performed two weeks after implant and blood plasma assayed for phosphoprotein phosphorus, phospholipids, protein, and total calcium content. Although hypophysectomy resulted in some changes in the blood plasma composition, these changes are minor compared to those seen in fish treated with estradiol-17β. Administration of estradiol-17β to juvenile rainbow trout caused a pronounced increase in plasma levels of phosphoprotein phosphorus in both shamoperated and hypophysectomized fish when compared to corresponding controls, indicating an induction of vitellogenin synthesis in the liver." @default.
