- W109452408 abstract "Indian Fiction in English (and indeed Indian Hinglish cinema) in the last decade or so has increasingly highlighted the experience of Indian immigrants in other countries, primarily the US and UK. These constitute the new diaspora, unlike the earlier generation of immigrants who went as indentured labour to the colonies. Scattered examples of East-West encounters (rather than immigrant experience) have occured in Indian Fiction in English earlier: novels such as G.V. Desani's All About H. Hatterr (1948) and Ved Mehta's Delinquent Chacha (1969) come to mind. Hatterr is an irreverent hybrid while Chacha is an Anglophile who wishes to live in London on any pretext, works in an Indian restaurant and is watched over by his Oxford-educated well-adjusted upper crust nephew. These novels do not really touch upon the pains of displacement and dislocation. Bharati Mukherjee's Wife (1975) is one of the first Indian novels in English which treats at length the frustration and loneliness of the life of the Indian immigrant in an inhospitable, unfamiliar, new context in the person of a young Bengali housewife, Dimple, who has an affair with an American and in a moment of neurotic fantasy signifying her complete breakdown due to the stress of her experience, stabs her dull Indian husband from an arranged marriage with a knife. It is in the 1990s that the immigrant/diasporic novel has burgeoned as a visible sub-category in the body of Indian Fiction in English (IFE). Indians travel more frequently now than before. Television has made foreign lands accessible at home. Many Indians are inevitably influenced by global culture. Inevitably the perspective on home" @default.
